Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control which can vary from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting.  The condition becomes more prevalent with age.  There are four types of urinary incontinence:

1. Stress Incontinence—urine leaks when body movements put pressure on the bladder (ie. sneezing or coughing)

2. Urge Incontinence—the need/urge to urinate comes on too fast to get to the toilet (also called overactive bladder)

3. Overflow Incontinence—a constant dripping of urine caused by an overfilled bladder because the bladder never empties completely

4. Functional Incontinence—normal bladder control but a physical disability interferes with the ability to move around and get to the bathroom

 

There are several causes of incontinence:

· Weak or overactive bladder muscles

· Blockage (ie. an enlarged prostate)

· Nerve damage or disease
