Diseases of the respiratory system can be divided into four general areas:

1. Obstructive—conditions which impede the rate of air flow in and out of the lungs (such as emphysema, bronchitis, or asthma)

2. Restrictive—conditions which cause a reduction in the functional volume of the lungs (such as fibrosis or sarcoidosis)

3. Vascular—conditions where there is a general inability to exchange blood gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide (such as pulmonary edema)

4. Infectious, environmental, or other diseases (such as pneumonia or tuberculosis).

Another common respiratory condition is sleep apnea where breathing ceases for ten seconds or more repeatedly throughout the night.
